Baghdad (IraqiNews.com) – Prime Minister Mohammed Shia Al-Sudani today, Sunday (September 21, 2025), approved the results of the investigative committee for the tragic fire incident in Kut, which resulted in the referral of several officials and employees to the judiciary. The move is a key step in the government’s commitment to holding officials accountable for negligence and preserving citizens’ lives.
According to a statement from the Prime Minister’s media office, the investigative committee concluded that a number of officials and employees were negligent in their duties. The report found that they allowed the project to be built without a license, approved the building’s electricity connection without proper authorization, and failed to take the necessary legal and administrative measures to prevent the tragic loss of life.
Based on the committee’s findings, the following individuals have been referred to the judiciary:
- The former Governor of Wasit.
- The Director of Civil Defense in Wasit.
- The former and current Mayor of Kut.
- The Director of Wasit Electricity Distribution.
- All employees responsible for monitoring violations and those who approved the building’s electrical supply.

The statement concluded that in addition to the judicial proceedings, disciplinary action will be taken against the officials and employees. The tragic fire in Kut on July 16, 2025, in a commercial center, had resulted in the deaths of approximately 70 people and prompted a nationwide campaign to enforce safety standards.
