Baghdad (IraqiNews.com) – The United Arab Emirates issued a strong condemnation on Saturday following a targeted drone attack on its Consulate General in Erbil, the capital of the Kurdistan Region.
This marks the second time within a single week that the diplomatic mission has been hit, resulting in the injury of two security personnel and significant structural damage to the consulate building.
The Emirati Ministry of Foreign Affairs described the incident as a treacherous and unprovoked terrorist attack and a flagrant violation of the Vienna Convention on Diplomatic Relations.
The latest strike follows a similar incident on Monday, March 9, when debris from intercepted suicide drones fell near the consulate compound, causing material damage but no casualties at that time. In the Saturday dawn attack, however, at least one loitering munition successfully bypassed local defense perimeters to strike the facility directly.
The UAE has formally called upon the federal government in Baghdad and the Kurdistan Regional Government (KRG) to launch an immediate investigation to identify the perpetrators and ensure their accountability.
The targeting of the UAE mission is part of a broader surge in hostilities against diplomatic and military sites across Iraq since the regional conflict began on February 28. Security analysts suggest that the UAE is being targeted due to its perceived alignment with Western interests. To date, the Kurdistan Region has faced over 200 drone and missile attacks, with Erbil emerging as a primary flashpoint for proxy confrontations between regional actors.
