UN continues to engage in Iraq after UNAMI’s termination

Baghdad (IraqiNews.com) – Following the termination of the mandate of the United Nations Assistance Mission for Iraq (UNAMI) on December 31, 2025, the United Nations continues its work in Iraq under the direction of the United Nations resident coordinator, in close collaboration with the Iraqi government and people.

This signals a new chapter of collaboration between Iraq and the United Nations, reflecting the country’s shift to long-term sustainable development, according to a statement released by the United Nations Resident Coordinator Office.

The United Nations Sustainable Development Cooperation Framework (2025-2029), agreed upon with the Iraqi government on December 25, 2025, guides the organization’s activities.

The framework is the UN’s strategic plan for supporting Iraq’s national goals and accomplishing the sustainable development goals.

The United Nations team in Iraq, which includes 26 UN agencies, funds, and programs, will continue to help the country with policy advice, institutional and capacity building, and technical assistance in accordance with national objectives and Iraq’s Vision 2030.

Major areas of collaboration include increased access to education, health, and social services; economic growth; environmental preservation and climate action; and the rule of law.

The United Nations stressed that it remains dedicated to assisting Iraq’s government and people in pursuing inclusive and sustainable development.
