Iran Stands Against Kurdistan Independence: Official
The Islamic Republic of Iran officially opposed any referendum on Kurdistan Region’s independence from Iraq, saying the unity of the country must be preserved.
Speaking to reporters on Monday, Iranian Foreign Ministry Spokesperson Bahram Qasemi, said Kurds have been granted with their rights within the Iraqi constitution, and they should not harm the sovereignty of the country.
“We support Iraq’s territorial unity and we stand against any split in the country,” Qasemi said, predicting Kurdistan’s independence to not happen in the near future.
He also pointed out that Kurds are an important part of Iraq and they need to help the unity of the country.
Several top Kurdish officials earlier this year stated that Erbil will be holding a referendum on independence from Iraq before the end of the current year, with some of them suggesting it to take place in August or September.
