Canada to Equip a Peshmerga Battalion: Official
Canada is expected to deliver military assistance to the Peshmerga Ministry of the Kurdistan Regional Government (KRG) in the near future, according to a Peshmerga source.
Brigadier General Hazhar Omer, director of Coordination and Relations for the Ministry of Peshmerga Affairs, told BasNews on Sunday that “Canada is set to equip a battalion from the Peshmerga forces,” noting that the equipment will include all the necessary weapons and military aid.
“All the procedures for the provision of the military assistance are over,” he said, adding that they are expecting the assistance to be delivered in the near future.
The official explained that the Peshmerga Ministry signed a third Memorandum of Understanding with Canada, according to which the country will provide a Peshmerga battalion with the necessary military equipment.
In 2014 Canada began supplying the Peshmerga forces in Iraq with weapons and ammunition in order to to assist them in the battle against the Islamic State.
Currently, there are about 200 Canadian soldiers assisting the Peshmerga forces in northern Iraq.
