Iran confirms continuous gas supplies to Iraq Iraqi News

Baghdad (IraqiNews.com) – Iranian Deputy Oil Minister and Head of the National Iranian Gas Company (NIGC), Saeed Tavakoli, stated on Monday that gas exports to Iraq are continuing normally with no restrictions.

During his participation in an event focusing on digital transformation in Iran’s gas industry, Tavakoli confirmed that gas exports to Iraq have not been interrupted and are continuing smoothly, Shafaq News reported.

Reports published earlier indicated that Iraq is facing a severe energy crisis due to US restrictions on gas imports from Iran.

US sanctions on Iran made Iraq face a challenge to achieve energy security, particularly in the gas sector, which is crucial for operating its power plants.

Iraq relies on gas imports from Iran to fuel its power plants. After the US waivers allowing Iraq to receive gas supplies from neighboring Iran were canceled, Baghdad attempted to get a fresh exemption from the United States amid pressure on the government to find speedy solutions to the electricity crisis.

The spokesperson for the Electricity Ministry, Ahmed Musa, said earlier that Iraq depends heavily on gas imports from Iran to operate many power plants.

Iraq is receiving only 22 million cubic meters of the gas needed to operate power plants every day, out of the 55 million cubic meters necessary for the month, according to Musa.
