US Approves $100m Communications Sale to Iraq Iraq-businessnews

The US State Department has approved a possible Foreign Military Sale to the Government of Iraq for a nationwide communications and repeater system valued at up to $100 million. The Defense Security Cooperation Agency (DSCA) has notified Congress of the proposed transaction.

The package includes Radio Access Points, handheld radios, base stations, repeater systems, very-high-frequency vehicular radios, WiMax systems, Very Small Aperture Terminals (VSAT), IT infrastructure, shelters, solar equipment, cameras, installation materials, spares, training, surveys, Contractor Logistics Support, and US Government and contractor technical services.

According to DSCA, the sale will strengthen Iraq’s command-and-control capabilities, improving protection of borders, energy infrastructure, and civilian populations, while supporting wider US national security objectives. The transaction will not affect the regional military balance, and Iraq is expected to integrate the equipment without difficulty.

L3Harris will be the principal contractor. No offset agreement has been proposed at this stage. Implementation will require two US Government staff and five contractor personnel to be based in Iraq for five years to support programme reviews, system upgrades, and in-country training.

L3Harris was formed in 2019 from the merger of L3 Technologies and Harris Corporation.
