Al-Maamel Area in Western Mosul Recaptured from IS

Another Islamic State (IS) controlled area in western Mosul has been recaptured by the Iraqi government forces.

The Iraqi army’s elite Counter-Terrorism Service forces took over the al-Maamel area on Wednesday, the Nineveh operations command said, as reported by Iraqi News.

Due to the difficulties in capturing the city of Mosul from its southern side, the Iraqi forces opened a new front to target the city from the northwestern direction last week.

Earlier this week, the Iraqi Interior Ministry reported that approximately 3,320 IS militants have been killed since the operation to retake western Mosul was launched in February, after eastern Mosul was declared liberated in January. This is the seventh month of the offensive to free Mosul from IS militants.
