Iran Seizes Foreign Oil Tanker in the Gulf: State Media
Iranian forces on Sunday seized an oil tanker smuggling crude, Iran’s state media reported.
“The IRGC’s naval forces have seized a foreign oil tanker in the Persian Gulf that was smuggling fuel for some Arab countries,” the report quoted country’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) commander Ramezan Zirahi.
The commander said seven crewmen were also detained on the oil tanker carrying 700,000 liters of fuel.
“The seizure of the oil tanker was in coordination with Iran’s judiciary authorities and based on their order,” Ziahi added.
Earlier in July, Iranian forces seized a British-flagged oil tanker near the strategic Strait of Hormuz for alleged marine violations. The seizure further escalated tensions between Tehran and the West.
EU said later it was taking into consideration patrolling the Strait of Hormuz to ensure navigation freedom and a safe route for international oil shipments. Source
