KRG Shuts Down 60 Illegal Oil Refineries in Erbil Province

Kurdistan Regional Government (KRG) has closed down 60 oil refineries in Erbil province for failing to abide by the rules and regulations, hoping to address the issues related to illegal businesses in the sector.

Erbil governorate has formed a committee working for the past two years to close down illegal oil refineries, often blamed for massive damages to the environment besides their negative involvement in the oil market.

Head of the committee, Nabaz Abdulhameed, who is also the mayor of Erbil, told BasNews that there are only 20 oil refineries operating across Erbil province now.

He said the government crackdown on illegal oil refineries is planned to come to a conclusion in the near future with a very limited number of refineries who abide by the environmental standards and other regulations. Source
