Iraq has held talks with US oil company Chevron on potential cooperation in developing the Nasiriyah oil field and possible engagement at the West Qurna-2 field.
The discussions focused on advancing investment negotiations between the Ministry of Oil and the US energy company, within the framework of Iraq’s strategy to work with international firms on field development, technology transfer and skills development.
The government said cooperation with global energy companies is being pursued with an emphasis on environmental standards, social benefits and urban development in oil-producing areas. Plans also include expanding national refining capacity and laying the foundations for a petrochemicals industry in Dhi Qar and other producing provinces.
Chevron said it supports Iraq’s vision of becoming a regional energy hub and is looking to develop long-term partnerships to ensure effective development of oil fields.
Last week, Iraq’s Ministry of Oil issued exclusive invitations to several major US oil companies to submit bids for taking over the operatorship of the West Qurna-2 field.
