Iraqi Air Defense System Mistakenly Attempt to Shoot Down US-led Coalition Drone

ERBIL — The Iraqi Air Defense System on Saturday mistakenly attempted to shoot down a drone belonging to the US-led Coalition in the province of Salahaddin, a security source said.

The Iraqi security forces were about to use the air defense system to target a reconnaissance aircraft at the entrance to Samarra district before it was shown that it belonged to the Global Coalition. The issue restricted the drone’s movement and canceled its reconnaissance mission.

The aircraft attempted to enter the airspace of Samarra district before its identity was determined, Iraqi reports said.

A day earlier, a rocket attack targeted Baghdad International Airport and resulted in material damage to a passenger plane and a runway as well.
