Iraqi President Says Destruction in Mosul Is Horrendous
Iraqi President Fuad Masoum noted the current “horrendous” state of Iraq following the nearly three-year war on Islamic State (IS) militants and the need for international assistance in rebuilding the country’s second largest city as well as other war-torn areas.
“We will get rid of Daesh as a military power soon and we now need huge financial capabilities in order to bring back stability to the areas it was dominating,” said Masoum while speaking at a press conference in Amman, Jordan on Friday, following his meeting with King Abdullah of Jordan on Thursday. He added that some damage, such as those inflicted on historical and archaeological sites is irreparable.
Although rebuilding efforts “are not easy and require patience and perseverance,” the fight against the IS “has managed to unite Iraqis of different sects, religions and backgrounds,” noted the Iraqi President.
“Iraq is stronger in its unity [and it] will be an important country after getting rid” of IS militants, stressed Masoum.
According to Masoum, King Abdullah II expressed his willingness to assist in the rebuilding efforts of the country. However, further assistance will be required. He called on investors to take part in the reconstruction process.
“We should invest all we have to rebuild Iraq, which is rich in mineral resources, water, land and human capital,” Masoum said.
He noted that the Turaibil-Karameh border crossing between Jordan and Iraq would open soon and that efforts are being undertaken to guarantee its safety.
The Iraqi President will take part in the World Economic Forum on the Middle East and North Africa (WEF MENA) which Jordan will be hosting until May 21.
